Reports on Korean Children for October, 2005 JunkYu Choe seems to be making a good adjustment to his Canadian home and school. He plays soccer Tuesdays and Wednesdays with his school team, and Thursdays and Saturdays with a community team, and is enjoying his sport. He and his host brother go swimming most Fridays after school, and have been going ice-skating at the local arena on weekends., and playing basketball in a park. His host mother rented him a trombone for use in the school band. He had some initial difficulties learning the rules of the home (such as shutting the doors when he enters the house) but in the last few weeks, routines have been accepted and JunkYu seems much more relaxed and happier . Having his own bicycle seems to be really important to him, so Tasha and Boyd will take him soon to purchase one. They are pleased with his adjustment and are working hard to help him express himself and explain his needs and feelings. ÃÖÁØ±Ô ÁرԴ ij³ª´Ù¿¡ ¿Í¼ Çб³¿Í Ȩ½ºÅ×ÀÌ¿¡ »ó´çÈ÷ Àß ÀûÀÀ ÇÏ´Â °Í °°½À´Ï´Ù. Jae Bong Lee has had a difficult beginning to his life in the Comox Valley. Not having access to his suitcases for several weeks was disturbing, and he had difficulty with his computer hookup. There were initial problems with his timetable at school and his classes were changed several times. He found all of these things upsetting and his host mother was concerned that he was spending a lot of his time in his room isolated from the rest of the family. However, when Jae Bong and I went out for a drink at the local Tim Horton¡¯s café, he said he is feeling much more settled now. He has accepted his need for ESL classes to improve his English in order for him to be successful in regular academic classes next semester. His host mother took him for a day around the Comox Valley, introducing him to what we have to offer. They plan a trip to Coombs to see the Buddhist temple there once it opens. He has played basketball at local parks with other students. Jae Bong has promised me that he will find an activity that will take him outside the home at least once a week and that he will not spend more than two hours a day on his computer outside of school requirements. He smiled often and easily, and seems to me to be developing good skills in English and a good adjustment to the valley. ÀçºÀÀ̴ óÀ½ ¾ó¸¶ µ¿¾È ÄÚ¸ñ½º¿¡ ¿Í¼ ´Ù¼Ò ¾î·Á¿òÀ» °Þ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. He plays soccer twice on weekends, and has tutoring lessons one hour a week on Tuesday evenings. On Fridays the family rent a movie and have special dinners. James and his host brother love to swim at the local wave pool and bicycle in the neighbourhood. On Thanksgiving, they went to a family friend¡¯s cabin on the Oyster River and played on the beach and fished. They had Thanksgiving dinner at Grandpa and Grandma¡¯s home and James had three helpings of turkey! James makes rice krispie squares with Grandma and really enjoys them. He has been introduced to ice hockey and is becoming a fan of the Vancouver Canucks¡¯ NHL team. The family is very reluctant to have James leave them in November, as they are enjoying him so much and his English is improving so quickly. When we took him and several others to the Dairy Queen last night for treats, we were very impressed with this charming little fellow. He would definitely benefit from more time spent living in Canada. The family are planning a trip to Disney world in Florida in the March spring break, and would very much like to have James join them!
