International students explore language, culture Ted Durnin, Peak Reporter 01/12/2006
International students often need a couple of days to adjust to the time zone change after they travel to Canada. Five Korean students who arrived on January 4 for a stay in Powell River managed to get to Kelly Creek Community School the next morning, and were rewarded with waving flags and welcoming signs in Korean and English at an assembly of the entire school. A multimedia presentation with images from both Canada and Korea also celebrated their arrival.
At the same assembly, several musicians performed to recognize the arrival of stringed instruments at the school. Kelly Creek principal Jacque Scholtz said some of the Korean students will be playing the stringed instruments during their stay.
The Korean students are in grades four through seven. Jin A. (Gina) Choi, Woo Wok (Monica) Jeon, Ji Woo (Christine) Kim, Hyun Hee (Iris) Lee and Min Su (Alex) Jeon will attend Kelly Creek for the next four weeks. Plans are in place to accommodate them for two weeks. Nine new students will join them for another two weeks, and then another nine will travel to Powell River after the original five leave.
Brian Chae, president of Two Way Canada Study Consulting, accompanied the students on the trip. He said most students who take advantage of the program are elementary level, with a few secondary students. He has organized placements in Puntledge Park Elementary School in Comox, BC and Parksville Elementary School in Qualicum, BC in the last two years. This is the first time students are coming to Powell River through his program.
"One student has come again,"said Chae. "She had been at Parksville."
Woo Wok (Monica) Jeon, a grade-seven student, is in Powell River with her brother, Min Su (Alex), a grade-five student.
Students are billeted with Canadian families. "Because the focus is language and Canadian culture, they're looking to have them pair up," said Laurie Yule, coordinator of the home stay program for ESL (English as a Second Language) students in Powell River. "It makes sense."
Yule, a former teacher at Kelly Creek, said students there are very friendly. She also said she was impressed that the Korean students already speak some English.
Yule added there are students in Powell River right now from Mexico, Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong as part of School District 47's international student program. A first this year is a student from mainland China. "These are students that are coming for a short period of time," said Yule. "I want to let people know that if they see a young student in the community, to say hi and make them feel welcome."
