Reports on Korean Children for October, 2005
Minji Kim continues to thrive in her homestay and school. She is a quiet leader, an impressive young lady! Her English skills are very strong and she is enjoying the challenges of her school. She has many happy memories of camping experiences of the summer, but as the weather is changing and becoming cooler and wet, camping is over for the year. Her whole face lights up with delight when she talks to the evenings she watched the starry sky and the night she saw the Northern Lights. We took her and some other Korean children to the Dairy Queen for treats last night, and as usual, we were so pleased with Minji¡¯s courtesy, friendliness and happy manner. She is looking forward to Hallowe¡¯en as she will be attending parties with friends and a bowling costume party with other Korean children. She is doing well, and we will be very sorry to see her leave in January.

Sillia (Seo Hyeon) Kang has impressed herself upon us as a very intelligent creative little girl who loves to challenge herself. Her teacher has found a more advanced mathematics text book that she is working from, and she is doing very good work in her other courses following the regular curriculum. Intellectually, she is ahead of her class, but socially, she is enjoying her placement. She loves to play basketball which she does weekly at the community recreation centre. She and her host siblings are adjusting to playing and living together and life at home seems to be going smoothly. She enjoyed her encounters with the mountain jays and feeding them from her hand. When we took Sillia and several other Korean children for treats, she said she was happy and certainly her little face glows when she talks with people. She prefers to associate with Canadian children, however, as she is determined to learn as much English as she can. Sillia is doing well! ½Ç¸®¾Æ´Â ¿ì¸®¿¡°Ô Ç×»ó Àڽſ¡°Ô µµÀüÇϰí, ÁöÀûÀ̸ç, âÁ¶ÀûÀÎ ¼Ò³à·Î¼ ¸Å¿ì °¨¸íÀ» ÁØ ¾î¸°À̶ø´Ï´Ù. ¼±»ý´ÔÀÌ ±×¿¡°Ô 8Çг⠼öÇÐÃ¥À» ÁÖ¸é¼ ±×°¡ ¼öÇÐ °øºÎ¸¦ ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖµµ·Ï ÇÏ¿´°í ´Ù¸¥ °ú¸ñµµ ¾ÆÁÖ ÈǸ¢ÇÏ°Ô Àß µû¶ó Çϰí ÀÖ´ä´Ï´Ù. Jae Wan Shim has had a good month. He has been having fun with sleepovers with his new best friend, Brandon. He spent a weekend in Port Alberni with Brandon¡¯s grandmother. At home, JaeWan has been enjoying golf, going to the driving range with his host father and playing on a par 3 course with a grandfather. Wyatt and JaeWan have been making extra money by finding golf balls and selling them to Mike. JaeWan has opened a bank account and loves to see it grow! The boys put on a magic show for the whole family at Thanksgiving that went over very well, and they are looking forward to Hallowe¡¯en. We will be holding a bowling costume party at the local bowling alley for the Korean children and their families, and there will be many community events celebrating the season as well. Assisted by his tutor, Jae Wan continues to thrive at school, and is now doing the regular grade 6 curriculum. Tracey has been very pleased with his academic growth. SoWon Yun is doing very well in her new Canadian home and school. She is a happy, pleasant young lady, and when we took her and some other Korean children out for a treat, we were impressed by her friendly manner. She and her host sister are becoming very close, playing together very well. She has been able to follow her telephone restrictions without a problem and is settling in to a regular routine of school and after school activities. There will be a costume Hallowe¡¯en party at the bowling alley on October 30, and we are looking forward to seeing So Won in her costume and interacting with the other children and their host families. Although she misses her family, she enjoys her telephone and email contacts and is happy and busy in her new life. We hope that So Won¡¯s family will encourage her adjustment by not visiting until June.
