We talked about all of these concerns.

The house is 1.8 kilometers from the school. (In our district, children from aged 5 to 14 do not have a bus unless they live more than 3 kilometers from the school.) He has a number of options:

J has chosen to ride to school in the morning with his host parents and walk home every day. This gives him the flexibility to play after school with his friends for a few minutes each day. He says he is happy with that arrangement.

J is bored. His Korean friends¡¯ host parents do not like him to play too often with him as he speaks Korean all the time and the other boys need to practice their English.

In addition, he says he is Catholic and would like to attend mass every week. There is a Catholic mass for young people on Saturday night followed by a youth group and his host parents have said they will see that he gets to this activity.

apparently this past week has been a very busy one with school dances for both Julian and J. The kitchen is also being repainted. Ming says they have certainly had a lot of pizza this past week but that is not usual. J said he enjoyed the dinner he had last night. Ming is now aware that Jae and his mother are concerned that he eat only healthy and not ¡°fast food¡± and she will try to accommodate him¡¦.but of course, on a busy night when the boys have a number of activities sometimes pizza is a good alternative to not eating until very late in the evening.

4. we have explained to Julian that Jae feels as the younger brother, Julian should not correct him or tell him what to do. Julian aagreed he will not do this any more. Julian and his parents understand that he is not to do this.

5. we talked about rules of the house. If J wants a friend to visit, he must ask his host mother and she would check with the friend¡¯s parents to make arrangements for pick up and drop off.

If a friend wants him to visit, the friend must ask his parents if that is okay, and then Jae must ask his host mom if he can visit a friend. ¸¸¾à Ä£±¸ÁýÀ» ¹æ¹®ÇÏ°í ½ÍÀ»¶§µµ ¸¶Âú°¡Áö·Î ±× Ä£±¸°¡ ±×ÀÇ

Then the host mom can check with the friend¡¯s mother to ensure all is well. The boys cannot bring a friend home without asking or go to a friend¡¯s house without asking. In the past, J has had to be reminded by Julian to follow these rules. Julian has agreed not to help J in the future. J understands that he must remember himself or accept the consequences.

6. the report card for the first term indicates that J is not paying attention in class or doing the work in ESL or Science.. He has only ¡°satisfactory¡± in Physical education, which indicates lack of effort and cooperation, He is now working on catching up on 20 overdue journal entries in ESL.

6. all members of the family say that the past few weeks they have felt very uncomfortable. I think there is a huge problem with communication.

J does not understand a lot of what his host parents say to him, and when he answers ¡°yes¡± or ¡°no¡± and they find out later he is not telling the truth, they are disappointed in him.¡¦.he says it is because he does not have the English words to explain, and we all understand that this has caused some communication problems.

He did not understand the 20 journal entries were a requirement of the teacher, not of his host parents. He seems concerned about the report card and promised to try harder at school and to tell his host parents if he has homework but does not understand how to do it.

Everyone seemed to feel better after the interview. I promised J that we (Michelle and I ) will return to his host family home in a month¡¯s time and we will check on progress and the comfort level of everyone.. Please assure his mother that J, although obviously not comfortable as yet in the home, does smile easily and seems willing to work on improving the situation.

And his host parents have a better idea of his concerns and they promise to talk to him daily and help him learn new words so he can talk more with them. Being able to speak English is the biggest problem.

His mark in Mathematics where he feels comfortable is over 90% and the attitude and behaviour are excellent there. I think his problems come from his lack of English skills, and with his tutor and host parents supporting the school, I think he will learn every day.
